Learning To Trust

by Leila Grandemange

Newborn puppies are so small and helpless and all our dogs are dependent on us. But can we really protect them from ALL harm? Breeding dogs and Dog Ownership in general has taught me some truly amazing life-lessons. One of the most important lessons that comes to mind is the ability to trust— to trust in the hand of God.

Over the years I’ve learned to accept that no matter how hard I try to protect and preserve life, there will always be things that I cannot change— Dogs get hurt, they fall sick, pups may be born dead, and our oldies will eventually pass away. Heartache is inevitable in this life, especially if you share life with one or more dogs. I’ve often asked myself, How many times can my heart break and still love again? I don’t have the answer, but I have found peace even in times of pain. Learning to trust that God is all-knowing, all-wise, and all-loving regardless of my circumstances has been one of the hardest concepts to grasp. Yet with each test and trial I’m reminded that ultimately I am not in control. There is so much freedom and peace in this knowledge, and yes, even joy!

I honestly believe that dog lover’s have some of the most compassionate and nurturing hearts on the planet. Thankfully the joys and benefits of dog ownership outweigh the sorrows. This is what keeps us going.  In the process, we learn to let go, and to trust . . .

“There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under Heaven: a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot…a time to mourn and a time to laugh…” —Ecclesiastes 3
